Mario Giampietro
Project Coordinator and UAB Team Leader
Mario Giampietro is ICREA Research Professor at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). He is an expert in energy analysis and integrated assessment of sustainability issues, and the ‘father’ of the innovative scientific approach, Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). He has more than 150 scientific publications and is author of several books.
François Diaz Maurin
Project Manager
François is an engineer with expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects in the French and US nuclear industries. He left the USA in late 2010 to join the IASTE research group of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona to work on the application of Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM) to energy supply issues. He recently finished his PhD on assessing the viability and desirability of nuclear energy with a newly developed protocol to compare the quality of different alternative energy sources. François is presently post-doc researcher and the scientific manager of the PARTICIPIA project.
Sandra G. F. Bukkens
PARTICIPIA Project Secretary
Sandra Bukkens is an agricultural engineer specialized in human nutrition and food systems. Her research interests cover human metabolism and the characterization of sustainability and performance of food systems in relation to different dimensions of analysis. She is presently research assistant at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. She has experience in the organization of international conferences, workshops and summer schools.
Zora Kovacic
Zora Kovacic is postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She works on science for governance, with a strong focus on the quality control of sustainability indicators. She is interested in the integration of participatory methods and quantitative analysis in support of decision-making processes. Zora holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and Development Studies, and an MSc and PhD degree in Environmental Science and Technology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Jesús Ramos Martín
Jesus Ramos-Martin (Economist, Ph.D. Environmental Sciences) is an ecological economist with expertise in the field of economic development and evolution of human systems from a biophysical point of view, by applying concepts from energy analysis, thermodynamics and complex systems theory. He is assistant professor at the Department of Economics and Economic History, and researcher at the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Alevgül H. Sorman
Alev is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She holds a PhD from the same institute. Her area of focus is on the energy metabolism of societies applying the specific approach of the Multi Scale Integrated Assessment of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). She has collaborated in several international and European projects applying the MuSIASEM framework to different cases. Alev holds a BSc degree in Environmental Engineering from the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey (with a period spent abroad at Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA) and an MSc degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science from Lund University, Sweden.
Xavier Biarnés
